Behind the Scenes: Bringing The Sea Buddies to Life
Creating The Sea Buddies has been an incredible journey—one that started as an idea inspired by my love for the ocean and has now grown into a full-fledged book series aimed at inspiring kids to care for our marine world.
The Inspiration Behind the Series
Growing up near the ocean, I spent much of my life surrounded by its beauty. From lobster and herring fishing to sailing and scuba diving, my experiences have given me a deep appreciation for the sea and the creatures that call it home. When I set out to find a children's book that reflected this passion—one that combined adventure, conservation, and marine life education—I realized there weren’t many out there that captured exactly what I was looking for. So, I decided to create it myself!
The Magic of Scuba Diving: A Whole New World Below the Surface
One of the most incredible things about scuba diving is experiencing the ocean in a way most people never get to see. It’s like entering a whole new world—one that’s peaceful, mesmerizing, and full of life. The moment you descend, everything changes. The sounds of the surface fade away, replaced by the quiet hum of the ocean. Schools of fish weave through the water, colorful marine life moves effortlessly around you, and every dive brings something new to discover.
It’s these experiences that inspire The Sea Buddies—I want kids to feel that same sense of wonder and appreciation for the ocean, even if they’ve never had the chance to dive below the waves themselves.
From Idea to Illustration
Once I knew I wanted to bring The Sea Buddies to life, I started outlining stories that would be both engaging and educational. The first book in the series, The Sea Buddies: Turbo and Surge, serves as an introduction to how The Sea Buddies came to be. It highlights the importance of teamwork—not just among marine life, but also between the ocean’s creatures and the humans who will go on to help protect them.
Turbo, a sea turtle, and Surge, a shark, spot two young scuba divers, Layla and Ian, as they prepare for their dive from a boat nearby. While Layla and Ian are just excited for their underwater adventure, their unexpected connection with Turbo and Surge becomes the spark that sets everything in motion. This book lays the foundation for the Sea Buddies mission—where marine life and humans come together to make waves and protect our oceans.
Right now, the book is in the illustration process, which is an exciting step! Seeing the characters and underwater world come to life visually is incredible, and I can’t wait to share the final product. Illustrations are a key part of making The Sea Buddies fun and engaging while also ensuring that kids get an accurate and visually appealing representation of the ocean.
Researching for Accuracy
Since The Sea Buddies is more than just a story—it's also about ocean conservation and education—I wanted to make sure everything in the books is factually accurate. That’s why I’ve been reaching out to marine conservation organizations and sustainable fisheries experts to ensure that the messages in the stories align with real-world conservation efforts.
What’s Next for The Sea Buddies?
While Turbo and Surge’s adventure is well underway, I’m already starting work on the second book in the series, The Sea Buddies: Lenny the Lobster’s Cleanup Adventure! This story will focus on sustainable fisheries and the role of responsible fishing in protecting our oceans. It’s an important topic, and I’m excited to bring it to life in a way that’s fun and engaging for kids.
And this is just the beginning—there are plenty more ocean adventures to come!
